On December 5, 2024, OpenAI introduced the $200/month ChatGPT Pro subscription, which they describe as providing "scaled access to the best of OpenAI’s models and tools." While the price point is undeniably steep, subscribers gain unlimited access to some of the most advanced AI models and tools available on the market. These include OpenAI o1, o1-mini, GPT-4o, Advanced Voice, and more—cutting-edge technologies that represent the forefront of AI innovation.
Despite this premium offering, it’s not surprising to me that OpenAI continues to operate at a loss. This situation reinforces a perspective I’ve held for some time: OpenAI’s strategy of releasing an excessive number of models may not be the most sustainable or effective approach. While diversification can drive innovation, it also spreads resources thin and complicates the focus needed to achieve profitability.
